A Message from Brendan L’Heureux, Interim CEO
At St. John Ambulance BC & Yukon, community is more than a word. It is something we experience every time a volunteer answers the call, a first aider steps forward, a Therapy Dog brings comfort, a young person discovers the value of service, or a community partner invests in preparedness.
This month, we have once again seen what happens when people come together with a shared commitment to serve. From community celebrations and first responder recognition to leadership transitions, emergency preparedness, and meaningful partnerships, September has been a month of connection, service, and momentum.

When Community Shows Up, We Show Up Too
On September 5, our volunteers joined MP Tamara Jansen’s End of Summer Picnic at Langley City Park, bringing the spirit of St. John Ambulance to a local gathering. The community responded with genuine appreciation for the work our volunteers do, creating opportunities for conversation, connection, and greater awareness of how St. John Ambulance serves British Columbians. This reciprocal relationship is at the heart of community service. Thank you to our volunteers for consistently representing the organization with professionalism, warmth, and service.
We were especially honored to be joined at the event by Marion MacKenzie, our longest-serving volunteer with over 70 years of dedication. Her presence highlighted the enduring commitment of our elder volunteers, and provided a wonderful opportunity for the community to connect with someone who has dedicated a lifetime to helping others.

A Night of Gratitude at the First Responders Gala
St. John Ambulance BC & Yukon was proud to attend the First Responders Gala, hosted by the Dwivedi Foundation, to recognize those who serve and protect our communities. Among those honoured was Dr. Hulbert Silver, a member of the Order of St. John, who received a Legacy of Service Award in recognition of his incredible contribution and service.
This recognition reminds us that service is often built quietly over years of commitment and compassion. We extend our congratulations to Dr. Silver and our appreciation to the Dwivedi Foundation for celebrating those dedicated to helping others.

Standing Ready for Wildfire and Emergency Response
Emergency preparedness is not seasonal, but British Columbia’s wildfire season is a powerful reminder of why readiness matters. Through our medical first response and emergency preparedness initiatives, St. John Ambulance helps communities prepare to act when circumstances change quickly. As emergencies continue to affect the province, we invite individuals and organizations to support our Emergency Response efforts to ensure we are ready before the next call comes.

This Month in St. John Ambulance History: A Global First-Aid Movement
September is an opportunity to reflect on one of the most enduring parts of our story: first-aid education.
• 1878: St. John Ambulance published its first first-aid manual, Aids for Cases of Injuries or Sudden Illness. Selling millions of copies over the years, it brought practical knowledge to generations.
• 1911: SJA First aid classes began in British Columbia, including First aid training in mine camps.
• 2026: Every September, the world marks World First Aid Day to raise awareness and encourage confidence in emergency response.
The tools and technology have changed, but our purpose remains the same: helping ordinary people become ready to do something extraordinary.

Volunteer & Community Spotlight
Welcoming Our New Brigade Commissioner
Following a Change of Command Ceremony on August 29, we proudly welcomed David Hodgins, KStJ, as the new Brigade Commissioner of St. John Ambulance BC & Yukon. We extend our deep gratitude to Frederick Yim, who served as Brigade Commissioner since 2023 and now continues his service as Past Commissioner. We look forward to the continued leadership and growth of our Brigade, anchored in our core values of Service, Compassion, Respect, and Excellence.
Four-legged Frontline Support
Meet Opi, the unassuming hero of the OK Falls Fire Camp, seen here wearing his red slicker and matching fire hat. While he didn’t fight flames, his work during the intense 2026 wildfire season was equally critical. As a St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog, Opi was a daily fixture at the response center. Weary firefighters carrying immense responsibility could look into his gentle eyes to find comfort, connection, and a few precious minutes of relief from the emotional storm. He was a small, steady light in their darkest days.
Opi’s visits were part of an innovative pilot program between SJA Therapy Dog teams and Health Emergency Management BC. As communities faced deep uncertainty, these volunteer teams supported the rescuers themselves, who were working grueling hours in demanding environments. The simple presence of dogs like Opi gave front-line personnel essential moments to pause, recharge, and reconnect under heavy stress. We extend our profound gratitude to Opi, his handler, and all our dedicated volunteer teams. Their selfless commitment reminds us that sometimes, the most vital first aid is simply a comforting touch and unconditional love. Thank you, Opi, for serving our heroes.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Our youth programs introduce young people to practical skills, responsibility, teamwork, and the importance of looking out for others. By cultivating a generation that understands compassion and preparedness, we are helping to shape tomorrow’s community leaders.
New Connections: South Arm Community Centre & Local Festivals
- South Arm: Beginning in October, St. John Ambulance BC & Yukon will connect with residents at the South Arm Community Centre during its monthly wellness clinic for adults 55+. This busy community hub offers a wonderful opportunity to share how members can turn their time and experience into meaningful service.
- Community Festivals: Our volunteers continued to build trust and connect with the public at regional events, including the IPE (Interior Provincial Exhibition) in Armstrong.
