Canine Library: Fostering Literacy and Well-being Through Canine Companionship

On September 21, 2024, the tranquil setting of John Hendry Park in Vancouver transformed into a haven of literary and canine delight during the fourth annual Canine Library event. This initiative, a collaboration between the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, Vancouver Public Library, Trout Lake Community Centre, and St. John Ambulance BC & Yukon, offered a unique opportunity for community members to engage in reading sessions with therapy dogs.

Participants of all ages were invited to “check out” a therapy dog for 10-minute reading sessions, creating a nurturing environment that encouraged reading and emotional well-being. The event also featured a poetry workshop led by Vancouver Public Library’s Writer-in-Residence, enriching the literary experience for attendees.

The St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program, renowned for its commitment to enhancing community well-being, played a pivotal role in this event. Our therapy dog teams, trained to provide comfort and support, have been instrumental in various community settings, including hospitals, schools, and libraries.

The Canine Library event exemplifies the positive impact of our therapy dog teams in promoting literacy and emotional health. We are honoured to have contributed to this meaningful initiative and look forward to continuing our collaboration with community partners to foster well-being across British Columbia and Yukon.
