A Strawberry. A Scare. A Life Saved.

Sometimes, it’s the quiet moments that turn into emergencies — and sometimes, it’s the people right beside you who make all the difference.

It was a normal day at school when something suddenly went wrong. A student began choking on a strawberry, struggling to breathe. In that moment, there was no time to wait for help — someone had to act.

That’s when Imran Cavas, another student, and their teacher, Ms. Wittmann, jumped into action. They had both learned first aid techniques — like back blows and J-thrusts (also known as abdominal thrusts) — and they knew exactly what to do.

Together, they worked fast to clear the student’s airway. Their training, their courage, and their quick response gave the student what they needed most: another chance to breathe.

By the time paramedics arrived, the crisis was over — and the student was okay.

First Aid Turns Bystanders Into Life-savers

Imran and Ms. Wittmann were recognized with the St. John Ambulance Lifesaving Award for their brave actions. What they did wasn’t just the right thing — it was a life-saving act in a moment when every second mattered.

This moment reminds us all of something important: that first aid training empowers ordinary people to do the extraordinary – to save lives when it matters most.
